A Cost Effective Alternative To a Solicitor

Family Law Assistance

The only alternative to a solicitor.

Steven Wade is a family law advisor (McKenzie Friend) with nearly 20 years of experience helping people represent themselves in court. Having been through the system personally and supported thousands of others since, he knows what it’s like to face the stress, confusion, and pressure of doing it alone. This blog shares practical insights that empower you to take control of your case — without the legal jargon or the hefty solicitor’s bill.

Shh!Shhh!

You’re sorting out your child contact, finance issue or divorce. It’s costing you  £250+VAT an hour for your solicitor to help you out.

You’ve paid £500+VAT on account (aka `money up front’) and they’re now acting for you. Every month they’ll tally up what they’ve done for you, deduct money from that £500+VAT and then ask you to bring it up to balance. That includes dealing with paperwork, assistance at hearings, responding with correspondence, meetings with you too.

Time is divided into 6-minute increments, usually with a minimum 6 minutes added to your account, even for a 2-minute phone call (which works out at £25+VAT at the least).

The cost for a case can vary wildly, depending on how straightforward or otherwise it is. Of course…the more awkward you or your ex is, the more it costs.

But typically you can expect to pay your solicitor at least £5,000+VAT for a finance case, £7,000+VAT for a child case and maybe around £2,000+VAT for a divorce. You’ll need to factor in court application fees and paying your ex’s legal costs if they are made against you.

If you’ve googled how much a solicitor costs you’re probably not going to find any actual numbers on a website because no matter how good your solicitor is, they’re not fortune tellers. A case can be simple and resolved easily. Or it can be slow and drag on when you think it’s simple.

In short – it’s impossible to predict. It’s not like building a house. Unless you’ve asked a builder to quote you for a house but telling them you don’t know where you want it, how many rooms you want, what it is built out of or anything like that.

So what if there was an alternative?

This is where we come in! We are not solicitors but we can help get your finance, child or divorce case sorted for a fraction of the above costs, with often good results.

And we’ve been doing it for 15 years now too.

Many of our team members, including our co-founder Michaela Wade have legal qualifications. Our skills and experience have been gained through helping thousands of people in thousands of cases around the country in courts all the way up to the Royal Courts of Justice. Testimonials show how our previous clients describe us…

When I met Family Law Assistance, I was in a terrible state; so ill with stress and off work. In a short span of eight weeks I had spent £1,200 with a solicitor, fighting to see my little boy. This £1,200 essentially equated to three letters! I then found Family Law Assistance. I got my life back on track. I discovered I had a voice and I was of value to my son. My son needed me as much as I needed him.

You have a choice

How much do we charge?

Our fees are pretty straightforward:

  • Meetings are £95+VAT for a call that’s usually around 45 mnutes (they take as long as they take!). Initial consultations are just £50+VAT!
  • Assistance at hearings start at £250+VAT (for a remote hearing up to an hour long) – others we’ll quote for you depending on length and location. Once we’ve agreed the price for that, you pay just that regardless of whether your `1 hour’ hearing lasts 30 minutes or all day (it happens more often than you first think).
  • We’ll quote you for all other work. You ask us for help, we’ll tell you what the fee is and you choose whether you need our help or not.

Our invoices and quotes provide breakdowns of costs too. We’ll do as much or as little as you need us to do. Some people want a meeting to go through what is happening, others want help with as much as we can do. Paperwork, advice about how to respond to correspendence, help at hearings. Everything you need to run your case by yourself.
